Guide To Understanding Diamond Carat and Size

Carat is the most well known 'C' of the 4C's of a diamond.

When we talk about diamond carat most of us will often think about the size of a diamond. What most don't realise is that carat actually refers to the weight of a diamond. In fact, carat is defined as 200 milligrams. This means, a one carat diamond is 0.20 grams and a 5 carat diamond is 1 gram.

All else being equal, a diamonds price increases with diamond carat weight as larger diamonds are both rarer and in more desirable. Diamond prcing increases exponentially as a diamonds carat weight increases. However, a carat weight does not solely determine a diamonds value as this also depends on clarity, color, cut and a range of other characteristics as well.

It is important to understand that carat weight can appear differently across different diamond shapes (such as round brilliant, oval, emerald, cushion, pear, princess, marquise, radiant or heart - learn more about diamond shapes here). It is also important to understand that a diamond with higher carat weight may not necessarily appear larger. In addition, two diamonds of the same carat weight can also be different in size. This is due to how a diamond is cut. If a diamond is cut too deep it may look smaller than a lower carat diamond.

Below is a tool to compare diamonds of different carat weights. Scroll the carat slider to compare different diamond carat weights.
